Let the good times roll—for a long time—by taking good care of your hoverboard’s power system. We’ve got the lowdown on how to properly charge your board to maximize the life of its battery.
Top charging tips
For best-practice battery upkeep, keep these tips top of mind:
- Only use the charger that came with your Jetson hoverboard—or a replacement that is specific to your model. (Don’t see what you need online? Contact us!) Other chargers might seem to work—but if they’re not totally compatible, they could have a detrimental effect on your battery’s longevity.
- Always plug the charger into the wall outlet before plugging it into your hoverboard.
- Never overcharge the battery by leaving it plugged in overnight or for extended periods of time.
- Do not turn on the hoverboard while it’s charging.
- Charge your hoverboard to full capacity before storing it for long periods of time. While in storage, fully charge it once a month to maintain good battery and charger health.
When to charge
As a safety precaution, some of our hoverboards power off, slow down, or tilt upwards when the battery is near depletion—less than 10% charged.
You can keep an eye on your hoverboard’s battery indicator lights, though, to catch a low charge before those things happen.
Jetson hoverboards generally fall into two categories with regards to how those indicator lights communicate charge level.
-
By color - Jetson hoverboard models that have a single battery indicator light use colored illumination to signify charge level.
Here’s what those colors mean:
Green - Battery charge is at or above 50%.
Yellow – Battery charge is between 20 and 49%.
Red – Battery charge is less than 20%. Time to power up!
Models that fall into this category include the Alpha L, Impulse, Flash, Force, Remix, and Strike. The Spin also has a single battery light, which will remain green until battery charge falls below 20%--at which point it will flash red.
-
By number – For Jetson hoverboards with three battery indicator lights, you can check the charge level by looking at how many are illuminated.
As the battery depletes, the number of lights illuminated will go down.
Three green lights - Battery charge is at or above 50%.
Two green lights - Battery charge is between 20 and 49%.
One green light - Battery charge is less than 20%. Time to power up!
Models that fall into this category include the Hali X, Input, J-Beat, Litho X, Rave, Sync and Zone, as well as our Magma and Plasma hoverboards, which will also blink a single battery indicator light when battery charge falls below 10%.
A few variations on this:
- Our Impact, Sphere, and X10 hoverboards, as well as our Motokicks Electric Hover Shoes, follow the same idea, but the percentages represented by the indicator lights are slightly different. Three illuminated lights mean a charge level of 30% or higher; two mean a charge level of 20 to 30%; and one illuminated light means charge has dropped below 20%.
- Our Lumino, Pixel, and Stereofly hoverboard indicator light levels are also slightly different. Three illuminated lights mean a charge level of 75% or higher; two mean a charge level of 30 to 74%; one illuminated light means a charge of 10 to 29%; and one flashing light with a low battery announcement means the charge has fallen below 10%.
- The Tracer only has two battery indicator lights; when only one is illuminated, battery charge has fallen below 20%.
How long to charge
Charging times vary slightly by model.
- Up to three hours - Flash, Force, Impact, Impulse, Plasma, Rave, Sphere, Spin, Strike, Tracer, X10, and the Motokicks Electric Hover Shoes
- Up to four hours - Alpha and Sync
- Up to five hours - Hali X, Input, J-Beat, Litho X, Lumino, Magma, Pixel, Stereofly, and Zone
Your charger has an indicator light to tell you when your battery has reached full charge. When the charger is plugged into both the wall outlet and your hoverboard, it will illuminate in a red color while charging is in process; the light will turn green when charging is complete. (One exception: The indicator light on the charger for our Hali X hoverboard flashes green during the charging process and stops flashing when the battery has reached full charge.)
