Welcome to your J5 Electric Bike. This guide walks you through everything you need to assemble your e-bike, charge it, run your safety checks, and get rolling. Work through each step in order, and keep your user manual close by for the complete details.
Things you need to know
A little preparation makes assembly quick and safe. Here is what to have ready before you start.
Preparation
- Read the entire user manual, including all safety warnings, before you assemble or ride.
- Adult assembly is required. Keep small parts away from children during assembly.
- Take care when unboxing: the handlebar arrives only semi-attached. Remove all packaging and prop the e-bike upright on its kickstand before you begin.
- Throughout setup, "right," "left," "front," and "rear" are described as you would see them while seated on the e-bike.
- Fully charge the battery before your first ride.
- Check your fit: with both feet flat on the ground while straddling the frame, aim for 1–3 inches (2.5–7.6 cm) of clearance between you and the top tube.
What comes in the box
- Your J5 Electric Bike, with the wheels, fenders, cargo rack, kickstand, and carrying handle already installed
- Handlebar (requires assembly)
- Seat (requires assembly)
- Bell
- Front reflector
- Charger and charging cable
- Multi-tool for assembly and adjustments (included with some models, depending on production date)
Tools required
- A Phillips-head screwdriver, to secure the bell and front reflector (included on the multi-tool with some models)
- A manual air pump with a pressure gauge, to inflate the tires before your first ride (not included)
Step-by-step setup
-
Attach the handlebar.
With the e-bike propped on its kickstand, lift the stem tube slightly so it no longer touches the frame, but do not close the folding latch yet. Pull open the latch on the stem clamp, then slide the handlebar stem into the stem tube until the "minimum insertion" mark is no longer visible above the clamp. Hold the stem tube upright and close the stem clamp latch. Confirm the handlebar is secure — if the stem slides, tighten the clamp by turning the knob clockwise. Finally, raise the handlebar until the stem rests vertically on the stem base, and push the folding latch in until it clicks closed against the stem.
Warning:
To avoid a collapse of the handlebar post that could cause injury, make sure the clamp is secure around the stem tube and the folding latch is fully closed. Take care not to tug or tangle the wiring that connects the handlebar to the frame.
-
Attach and position the seat.
Pull open the seat clamp latch and find the "minimum insertion" mark near the bottom of the seat post. Holding the seat with its widest part toward the rear, lower the seat post through the clamp and into the seat tube until the "minimum insertion" mark sits below the clamp. At your desired height, close the seat clamp latch, turning the knob clockwise to tighten if needed. Press down firmly on the seat to confirm it does not slip.
Warning:
If the "minimum insertion" mark is visible above the clamp, the seat post is not inserted deep enough. Always keep the mark below the clamp to avoid injury.
- Unfold the pedals. Depending on your e-bike's production date, you will have one of two pedal types. For one type, pull the pedal outward and down until it snaps into place. For the other, pull the release bar toward the tip of the pedal, then pivot the pedal down until it snaps into place. Repeat for the second pedal.
- Secure the bell. Using a Phillips-head screwdriver, loosen — but do not remove — the screw on the bell clamp by turning it counterclockwise one to two rotations. Rotate the bell around the handlebar until the bell tab is within easy reach of your left thumb, then hold it in place and tighten the screw clockwise.
- Secure the front reflector. Rotate the front reflector clamp around the handlebar until the reflector faces forward. Slide it toward the center of the handlebar until the clamp feels snug on the thicker section. If needed, tighten the clamp screw clockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
Inflate the tires.
Before your first ride, bring both tires to 35–45 PSI. Twist the dust cap counterclockwise to remove it, add air with a manual pump while checking with a gauge until you reach 35–45 PSI, then twist the dust cap back on clockwise. Repeat on the second tire.
Important:
Use only a manual air pump. Never use an air compressor, which can cause the tire tubes to pop.
-
Charge the battery.
Connect the charging cable to the charger. Open the charging port cover on your e-bike, plug the cable into the wall, then plug the charger into the charging port. When the indicator light on the charger turns from red to green, the battery is fully charged: remove the charger from the port and unplug the cable from the wall. Close the charging port cover. A full charge takes approximately 5 hours, and you should fully charge the battery before your first ride.
Warning:
Failure to use the correct charger can result in fire and explosion, causing property damage, injury, and death. Use only the charger included with your e-bike or one obtained directly through Jetson.
Important:Never turn the e-bike on while it is charging.
- Run your pre-ride safety checks. Before every ride, confirm that both brakes engage smoothly and the pads are aligned with the disc; the frame and fork are undamaged and the folding latch is closed; the pedals and cranks are tight and spin freely; the stem and handlebar are locked in position; the tires are inflated to 35–45 PSI with no visible damage; and the chain is tensioned so you can lift its middle only about ½ inch. To test the brakes, walk the bike and pull the left handbrake, then the right, checking that each wheel slows and comes to a stop.
How to ride your J5
Once your J5 Electric Bike is assembled, charged, and checked, you are ready to power on and ride.
Wear an ASTM F1492-approved helmet positioned to cover your forehead, along with closed-toe shoes and protective gear, every time you ride.
To turn the e-bike on or off, quick-press the power button. Raise the kickstand before you begin.
You can ride the J5 three ways: with pedal assist, with traditional pedaling, or with the throttle. With the power on, pedaling triggers pedal assist, and the motor adds boosts proportional to your effort — gentler pedaling gives smaller boosts, harder pedaling gives larger ones. With the power off, you can pedal the J5 like a traditional bike. To ride on motor power alone, stop pedaling, keep your feet resting on the pedals, and slowly rotate the twist throttle toward you with your right hand; the more you rotate it, the faster you travel. Ease off the throttle to slow down.
Always keep your feet resting on the pedals, even when you are not pedaling, and never let them dangle off the side of the bike.
To brake, squeeze one or both handbrakes gradually; the left handbrake controls the front wheel and the right controls the rear. Squeeze more firmly to come to a complete stop.
Quick troubleshooting
If a handlebar or seat clamp latch will not close easily: The clamp knob is likely too tight. Pull the latch open and loosen the knob counterclockwise about ½ rotation at a time until the latch closes with ease.
If the stem or seat clamp is too narrow to receive the post: Widen the clamp by turning the clamp knob counterclockwise one to two rotations while holding the latch steady.
If a brake rubs or squeaks: A caliper is likely misaligned, so a pad touches the disc even when the brake is open. Realign the caliper as described in your user manual, or contact Jetson support.
If you notice a drop in speed: Your battery charge may have fallen below 25%. Recharge the battery to restore full performance.
If the e-bike powers off on its own: The battery has likely reached 0%. Charge it fully before your next ride.
You are ready to ride
That is it — your J5 Electric Bike is assembled, charged, and safety-checked. Take your first few rides somewhere open and familiar while you get a feel for the pedal assist and throttle, wear your helmet every time, and ride within your local laws and the limits in your user manual. If anything does not look or feel right, reach out to Jetson support before you ride.
