Need a change of pace? When you’re riding one of Jetson’s electric scooters, you can make that happen easily.
In terms of speed control, our e-scooters fall into two categories: those with only accelerator control, and those with accelerator control—and more! Stay the course for info on speed management for both categories, along with a list of which e-scooter models fall under each.
Before you read on—or try to get your speed on—we’ve got a few speed-related notes.
- All of our scooters have maximum speeds at which they’ll go; that max mph (miles per hour) can be found in each model’s user manual.
- Certain factors—including a rider’s weight, roughness of terrain, and weather conditions—can affect your e-scooter’s ability to reach maximum speed. You’ll be able to cruise the fastest on smooth, flat surfaces.
Let’s move on with those instructions…
Only accelerator control
All Jetson e-scooters have an accelerator that you can use to reach and maintain your desired speed. Think of that throttle in the same way you do a car’s gas pedal: The more you engage it, the faster you’ll go. When you want to ease back on speed—ease back on the accelerator—and/or engage the brake.
There are three types of accelerators, including two types of throttles--thumb and twist--and one booster button.
Throttles
Acceleration throttles are always on the right side of the handlebar.
To accelerate using a thumb throttle, apply downward pressure with (you guessed it!) your thumb. The following Jetson e-scooter models use the thumb throttle and brake combination as their only means of speed control:
- Beam
- Bio
- Cruise
- Echo
- Echo X
- E-Pocket
- Highline
- Slingshot
- And electric scooters for kids, such as the Glow and the Disney Buzz Lightyear, Frozen, Frozen Folding, and Toy Story 4 models
To accelerate using a twist throttle, use your right hand to rotate the throttle towards you. The following Jetson e-scooter models use the twist throttle and brake combination as their only means of speed control:
- E-Kick
- Globe
- Tempo
Booster buttons
Some of our kids' e-scooters have large buttons in the middle of the deck. To accelerate, push down on the button with your foot. These can be found on several of our branded e-scooters (Marvel, Disney, etc.).
Accelerator control—plus!
Our e-scooters with more advanced speed functionality begin with the same idea as those above: the more you engage the throttle, the faster you’ll go. But these Jetsons have additional speed control features: All have multiple speed modes to help you regulate your riding rate, and some also offer cruise control functionality.
- First, let’s talk speed modes: These e-scooters are preprogrammed with multiple speed modes, each of which allows you to reach a specific—and different—maximum mph when your scooter is set to it.
To change from one speed mode to another, bring the scooter to a stop and then quick-press a specific button on your scooter. (Which button? We’ve detailed that below for each model!) When your e-scooter hits the mode you want, just stop pressing the button.
Information about the maximum mph of each speed mode and how to know which speed mode your scooter is set in at any given point in can be found in your model’s user manual.
There are three good reasons for choosing a speed mode that limits your maximum riding pace:
- If you’re new to e-scooter riding, keeping your Jetson in a lower speed mode will help keep you at a comfortable pace for building riding confidence.
- While riding in an area that has lots of obstacles or pedestrians, setting your Jetson in a slower mode will make for safer scootering.
- Where speed limits are in effect, switching to a slower mode will help keep you under that threshold.
- Many of these models also allow you to activate cruise control, whereby you can pick a pace—and your scooter will do the acceleration and deceleration work to keep it. To disengage cruise control and go back to controlling the speed on your own—with your throttle—all you have to do is gently engage the throttle or brake.
Here’s a rundown of models with one or both of these speed functions:
- Breeze: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; use the + and – buttons to switch from one to another. Cruise control only at maximum speed; to engage, hold the throttle down while riding at full speed for at least ten seconds.
- Breeze Light: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; use the + and – buttons to switch from one to another. To engage cruise control, hold a steady pace for at least ten seconds.
- Canyon: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; quick-press the “light” button (left button on the center of the handlebar) to cycle through them. To engage cruise control, hold down the thumb throttle for nine seconds until you hear a “beep.”
- Element: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; quick-press the “settings” button (at the top of the e-brake throttle on the left side of the handlebar) to cycle through them. No cruise control functionality
- Element Pro: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; quick-press the power button to cycle through them. No cruise control functionality.
- Eris: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; quick-press the power button to cycle through them. To engage cruise control, hold down the thumb throttle for 10 seconds until you hear a beep.
- Knight: Thumb throttle. Three speed modes; quick-press the “function” button (at the top of your thumb throttle) to cycle through them. To engage cruise control, hold a steady pace for six seconds—and then the scooter will do the work to keep it.
- Ora Pro: Thumb throttle. Two speed modes; quick-press the power button to change from one to the other. To engage cruise control, hold a steady pace for six seconds—and then the scooter will do the work to keep it.
